DeKALB — Regional journalists and journalism educators gathered virtually Thursday for the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association’s annual awards ceremony.
The Daily Herald won the general excellence award in the daily category, and the Suburban Chronicle won the general excellence award in the nondaily category. The general excellence categories replace the sweepstakes awards, which previously were awarded to the organizations that had the best showing in the competition.
About 15 nameplates submitted 277 entries in this year’s competition.
The ceremony featured a panel of student journalists, which included Diana Anghel, editor in chief of the Daily Illini (University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana); Gabe Brady, Lifestyles editor for The Alestle (Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville); Ashley Daniels, reporter for The Vidette (Illinois State University); and Wes Sanderson, editor in chief of the Northern Star (Northern Illinois University).
NINA has been serving journalists and journalism educators in Northern Illinois in conjunction with the Communication Department of Northern Illinois University for 59 years.
