‘Facts Matter’ Columnist Will Keynote NINA’s Free, Oct. 26 Online Annual Conference And Awards Presentation

“Facts Matter” Columnist Bob Oswald will be the highlight speaker at the annual conference of the Northern Illinois News Association — and this year, there will be no cost for those who attend.

The Northern Illinois News Association is shifting its annual journalism conference and awards presentation to an interactive digital program to increase the program’s accessibility to those throughout northern Illinois who practice and celebrate journalism.

The virtual event takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26.  Click on this link to join the Zoom meeting at that time.

The program will focus on the challenges involved in teaching and promoting news literacy, highlighted by a keynote Q&A with Daily Herald Facts Matter columnist Bob Oswald.  It also will include a presentation of awards in this year’s NINA Editorial Contest.

Oswald will give his perspective on media literacy, which is an emphasis of the association’s work.

“Bob has been debunking misinformation in his column with the Daily Herald for several years,” said John Lampinen, president of the NINA Board.  “We’re excited to have him join us for an evening that celebrates journalism and factual information.”

Oswald is a veteran Chicago-area journalist who began his career with the Countryside newspapers, which eventually became Pioneer Press. He worked for the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune before returning to suburban journalism and is a former editor of the Elgin Courier-News. In addition to his Facts Matter column, he is a project editor for Town Square Publications, a division of the Daily Herald.

Oswald’s keynote and additional parts of the program will focus on news literacy. High school and college advisers and student journalists are encouraged to attend.

“We are interested in strengthening our focus on future journalists, and we hope this year to begin involving high school leaders in our annual conference,” Lampinen said.
